Chapter

Twenty-Two

‘How did you sleep, my dear?’ Maria asked Gabriel as he sat up in bed, tousle-haired and sleepy-eyed. She knew the answer as she had endured his restless legs for the entire night. Gabriel crawled into her bed at some ungodly hour saying that he wanted to go home and see Papa. He cried and she didn’t have the heart to ask him to leave.

Maria had given up on sleep and was sitting in a chair by the bedchamber window watching the sun’s rays begin to outline the distant hills.

‘I don’t know, Mama. I’m too tired to talk,’ Gabriel replied, collapsing into her lap.

They had arrived at the estate close to midnight. Alejandro stayed a short while to ensure they were settled then returned to Seville. He needed to be at the Real Alcazar at his usual time in the morning to ensure that suspicions were not raised.

Isabel had cast several surreptitious looks in his direction during the journey. To Alejandro’s great credit he remained focused on his conversation with Maria or looked out of the carriage window. He could not have seen very much but she was grateful for what she took to be his discretion. Perhaps Isaac was right, and they could trust him. They would soon find out.

‘Mama, I’m hungry,’ Gabriel whined.

Maria kissed him on the forehead and went out to the main room where she had left the basket of fruit and bread.

‘Thank goodness Isabel is still asleep,’ she thought. She was not ready to face interrogation by her daughter.
